Repair or Replace? A Straight Answer for Every Appliance

📅 April 16, 2026    ⏱ 8 min read    ✍️ Easy Home Repair Team

Every appliance repair technician gets asked the same question at least a dozen times a week: “Is it worth fixing, or should I just buy new?” The honest answer depends on three things: the appliance’s age, the cost of the specific repair, and the cost of a reasonable replacement. We’ll give you a practical framework here — the same one we use when we’re standing in someone’s kitchen and they’re asking us directly.

Repair vs replace

The 50% rule — a starting point

The most widely cited industry guideline is that a repair costing more than 50% of the cost of a new comparable appliance is generally not worth doing — unless the appliance is premium, or has sentimental value, or the specific repair extends the full remaining lifespan of the machine. This is useful as a starting point but oversimplifies in ways that often lead people to replace appliances they should fix, and vice versa.

The 50% rule doesn’t account for age. A $300 repair on a 2-year-old washing machine is almost always worth doing. The same $300 repair on a 12-year-old machine of the same brand might not be — because you’re investing in a machine that may have only 2–3 years of reliable life left regardless of the repair.

A better formula: if the repair cost is less than one year’s worth of ownership cost on a new machine, repair. A new mid-range washer costs around $700. One year’s ownership cost: ~$70 in electricity, a few service calls amortized. If the repair is under $400–500 and the machine is under 8 years old, repair is almost always the right call financially.

Appliance by appliance

Appliance Average lifespan Repair sweet spot Replace when
Refrigerator 14–17 years Under 10 years old, repair cost under $500 Over 15 years + compressor or sealed system failure
Washer 10–14 years Under 8 years old, repair cost under $350 Over 10 years + motor or transmission failure
Dryer 13–15 years Under 10 years old, repair cost under $300 Over 13 years + drum or motor failure
Dishwasher 9–12 years Under 7 years old, repair cost under $250 Over 10 years + control board + pump failure together
Oven / Range 15–20 years Almost always repair — ranges rarely fail catastrophically Structural failure, warped frame, major gas leak
Microwave (built-in) 9–10 years Under 5 years old, repair cost under $150 Over 8 years — most repairs aren’t economical

When premium brands change the math completely

The table above assumes mid-range consumer appliances. For premium brands — Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking, Miele, Wolf, Bosch — the math shifts dramatically toward repair in almost every scenario.

A new Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator costs $8,000–$14,000. A compressor replacement on the same unit costs $1,200–$1,800. Even on a 15-year-old Sub-Zero, a compressor replacement makes financial sense. The same applies to Viking ranges, Miele dishwashers, and Thermador appliances — they’re built to a standard that makes repair the right default unless the machine is structurally compromised or parts are no longer available.

Parts availability matters. Before deciding whether to repair an older appliance, confirm that parts are still available. Most major brands support parts for 7–10 years post-manufacture. Premium brands often support parts for 15–20 years. If parts are no longer available, the repair decision is made for you.

Repairs that almost always make sense

Repairs that require more careful evaluation

One honest thing we’ll always tell you

We make money on repairs, not on telling people to buy new appliances. So when we recommend replacement, we mean it. Our reputation is built on giving honest assessments — if a machine isn’t worth fixing, we’ll tell you that directly, point you toward what to look for in a replacement, and not charge you for an unnecessary repair.

When we recommend repair, it’s because we genuinely believe it’s the better financial and practical choice. The best way to get a clear answer is a professional diagnosis — we can assess the specific failure, pull the exact part cost, and give you the numbers so you can decide.
