You open the fridge to grab something from the bottom drawer and there it is — a small puddle of water sitting on the shelf or pooling on the floor in front of the refrigerator. It happens to a lot of people, and the first instinct is to wonder whether the fridge is broken beyond repair. Most of the time, it isn't. The fix is almost always the same thing: a clogged defrost drain.
If you live in the Inland Empire or along the Orange County corridor, your water supply is some of the hardest in California. That mineral-rich water accelerates the problem in ways most repair guides never mention.
How a modern fridge manages moisture
Every frost-free refrigerator runs automatic defrost cycles — typically one to three times per day. A heating element built into the freezer section melts any frost that has accumulated on the evaporator coils. That melt water has to go somewhere, so it flows down through a small drain hole at the bottom of the freezer compartment, travels through a rubber tube, and drips into a shallow drain pan underneath the fridge near the compressor. The heat from the compressor evaporates the water in that pan, and the whole cycle repeats silently, day after day.
When the system works, you never think about it. When the drain hole gets blocked, that melt water has nowhere to go. It refreezes at the bottom of the freezer, eventually forming a thick sheet of ice. As ice builds up, it starts pushing up under your crisper drawers. When the freezer runs a defrost cycle and can't drain fast enough, water spills over the ice shelf and drips down into the fresh-food compartment — the puddle under your vegetables.
Why hard water makes it worse
Southern California water is loaded with calcium and magnesium carbonates. Every time moisture passes through your fridge's drainage system, it leaves behind trace mineral deposits. Over months and years those deposits narrow the drain tube — the same way scale builds up inside a kettle. In areas with especially hard water, we've seen drain tubes that are nearly completely calcified after just two or three years.
The calcium scale also gives organic debris — food particles, mold spores — something to grip. That's why the blockage often smells slightly musty when you finally clear it.
Temecula and Murrieta tap water regularly tests above 300 mg/L of total dissolved solids. For context, the EPA's secondary (aesthetic) recommendation is 500 mg/L, but appliance manufacturers typically design drain systems assuming far softer water. Our technicians see drain-related leaks more often here than anywhere else we've worked.
Spotting the problem early
The classic puddle-under-the-crisper is the most obvious sign, but there are earlier warnings worth knowing:
- Ice sheet at the back of the freezer floor. If you pull out your freezer baskets and see a flat layer of ice that wasn't there before, your defrost drain is starting to back up.
- Water pooling inside the fridge near the back wall. This often precedes the floor puddle by a few weeks.
- A faint gurgling sound during or after a defrost cycle. The refrigerant and water are fighting for the same space.
- The fridge cycling more frequently than usual. Ice buildup on the evaporator forces the compressor to work harder and longer to maintain temperature.
- Musty or sour smell inside the fresh-food compartment without an obvious source.
What a technician actually does
When one of our technicians arrives for a refrigerator leak, the diagnosis process is fairly quick. We pull the fridge out from the wall, remove the drain pan to check for overflow, then take off the back panel inside the freezer to access the evaporator coils and drain hole. If we find a block of ice covering the drain, we use a small steamer or warm water to thaw it — never a heat gun or open flame, which can warp the evaporator housing.
Once the drain is clear, we run a thin flexible brush or a drain snake through the entire drain tube to break up mineral scale. Then we flush the tube with a solution designed to dissolve calcium deposits without corroding the plastic. We finish by pouring a small amount of the same solution down the drain to discourage future buildup, and we pour a cup of warm water through to confirm it flows freely into the drain pan.
On some models — Samsung and LG side-by-sides in particular — the drain tube exits at the back of the compressor compartment and we need to access it from outside the fridge rather than from inside. A few Whirlpool and Maytag models have a foam insulation sleeve around the drain tube that tends to collapse inward over time, pinching the tube shut even when there's no mineral buildup. In those cases we replace the sleeve with an aftermarket drain tube heater that keeps the tube from freezing in the first place.
Can you fix it yourself?
If you're comfortable pulling your refrigerator out, removing the freezer back panel, and working in a tight space, yes — a basic drain clearing is a DIY-friendly repair. You'll need a turkey baster or syringe to flush the drain with warm water, plus a length of thin flexible tubing (an aquarium air hose works) to push through the drain tube. Budget an afternoon and be prepared to mop up.
Where we recommend calling a professional:
- The drain clears but water comes back within a week. This usually means the drain tube heater has failed and is allowing ice to reform quickly — a part replacement, not a cleaning.
- There's visible ice on the evaporator coils themselves, or the coils are completely frost-free when they shouldn't be. Both indicate a defrost system component failure (the heater element, the defrost thermostat, or the main control board), not just a blocked drain.
- The leak appears to be coming from the ice maker water line rather than the drain system — a different problem entirely, and one that can cause significant water damage if left alone.
- Your fridge is a built-in Sub-Zero, Thermador, or Miele — these require specific procedures and disassembly steps that aren't intuitive without training.
Preventing the next blockage
If your fridge has had this problem once, it will likely happen again unless you change something. A few habits help:
- Every six months, pour a half cup of distilled white vinegar down the defrost drain. Vinegar dissolves calcium carbonate — the same chemistry your dishwasher descalers use — and keeps the tube clear between cleanings.
- Keep the area around the drain hole inside the freezer free of loose food. A frozen pea or a chip of ice can seed a blockage surprisingly quickly.
- If your area has very hard water and you've had multiple drain blockages, ask your technician about installing a retrofit drain tube heater. They run on 120V and maintain enough warmth to prevent refreezing even in winter, when fridge temperatures fluctuate more.
A note on water filters: the refrigerator's internal water filter (if you have one) does not filter the water that flows through the defrost drain — that drain water is condensation and frost melt, not filtered supply water. Replacing the filter won't prevent drain clogs.
The bottom line
A puddle under your fridge is almost always fixable, and in most cases it doesn't mean the refrigerator is near the end of its life. A clogged defrost drain is a maintenance issue, not a mechanical failure. Catch it early, clean the drain regularly if you're in a hard-water area, and your refrigerator will keep running quietly for years.
